The census area had a population of 55,331 in 1990, but the population was cut in half due to the creation of the new CDP of La Presa on the western end of the Spring Valley area. If Spring Valley remained intact, the 2000 census population would have been 59,384. The Greater Spring Valley area has over 100,000 residents.

There are 9,129 households out of which 40.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.8% are married couples living together, 15.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.4% are non-families. 17.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.90 and the average family size is 3.27.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 31.4% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 94.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.6 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $48,271, and the median income for a family is $51,217. Males have a median income of $36,338 versus $30,297 for females.
